As the first of the sea-run fishes to return to freshwater each year, Rainbow smelt are a sure sign of spring along the Maine coast; millions of these shiny little fish once returned annually to reproduce in coastal brooks, streams, and rivers. But historical overfishing, loss of spawning habitat, and warming waters have led to drastic drops in smelt numbers.
Volunteers of America Northern New England (VOANNE) proposes to utilize U.S. Housing and Urban Development funding for a portion of a multifamily, residential, affordable housing development at the Vizsla Avenue Subdivision in Bangor, Maine. Specifically, the funding would be utilized for construction of a group home, pavilion, and paved access road and parking areas.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is hosting five listening sessions to gather input from stakeholders on the Aquaculture Leasing Program, which was reorganized and now falls under the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture.
In light of this reorganization, as well as increased interest in the blue economy, aquaculture in general and growing demands on the program, DMR wants to hear directly from stakeholders as it plots a course for the future.
