Maine Coastal Program

Maine Coastal Program works together with local, regional, state, and federal agencies and non-governmental partners for the purpose of managing the conservation and development of Maine's coastal resources for the public benefit.

Maine is one of 34 states and territories that participate in the National Coastal Zone Management Program. The program is a voluntary partnership between the federal government and U.S. coastal and Great Lakes states and territories. It was authorized by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 to address national coastal issues. The program is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management

Maine Coastal Program was approved by NOAA in 1978 and is currently housed at the Maine Department of Marine Resources. Maine’s coastal zone includes:

  • 5,408 miles of coastline
  • All municipalities with tidal waters in their jurisdiction
  • State-owned submerged lands and islands out to three nautical miles
