Sea Urchin Zone Council
The Maine Sea Urchin Zone Council (SUZC) is an organization that plays a key role in
the management and conservation of the sea urchin fishery in Maine. Established in
1996 to advise the Department of Marine Resources on the sustainable management
of green sea urchins, the Council is composed of a diverse group of stakeholders,
including divers, draggers, processors, scientists, and one aquaculturist, all representing
different zones of the state (link to statute). The Council consists of 15 members—7
elected by industry representatives and 8 appointed by the Commissioner of Marine Resources.
The Council provides guidance on a variety of issues, including setting harvesting seasons and
fishing days, advising on urchin research, reviewing regulations, and bringing industry concerns
to state management.
