As the first of the sea-run fishes to return to freshwater each year, Rainbow smelt are a sure sign of spring along the Maine coast; millions of these shiny little fish once returned annually to reproduce in coastal brooks, streams, and rivers. But historical overfishing, loss of spawning habitat, and warming waters have led to drastic drops in smelt numbers.

Volunteers of America Northern New England (VOANNE) proposes to utilize U.S. Housing and Urban Development funding for a portion of a multifamily, residential, affordable housing development at the Vizsla Avenue Subdivision in Bangor, Maine. Maine 2023 Commercial Fisheries Value Increases by More than $25 Million
Augusta – 2023 was another strong year for Maine commercial fishermen who earned $611,277,692 at the dock, which was an increase of more than $25 million over 2022, according to preliminary data released by the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR).
“The Maine seafood industry continues to be a powerful economic engine for our state,” said Governor Janet Mills. “The dedication to sustainability and premium quality by our fishermen, aquaculturists and dealers is a source of tremendous pride for everyone who calls Maine home.”
