DMR Elver Industry Meeting Tuesday, January 28, 2025

Date: January 28, 2025

Time: 4:00 p.m.

Location: DMR’s Conference Room 118, Marquardt Building, 32 Blossom lane and remotely via Microsoft Teams

Town: Augusta

DMR is hosting an in-person meeting for members of the elver industry at the DMR Offices in Augusta (Rm 118 of the Marquardt Building, 32 Blossom Lane, Augusta) on Tuesday, January 28 at 4:00 pm.

The goal is of the meeting is to cover a number of topics of interest to Maine’s elver industry, including the following:

  • DMR’s proposed legislation (LD 44), which would limit the amount of time that a harvester may hold elvers prior to sale.  We understand that this has been very controversial with harvesters and dealers alike and to be clear, DMR is happy to see this changed if a different idea is proposed.
    • DMR is open to other suggestions for how we can ensure that as a State we are minimizing dead loss and ensuring that the total poundage of harvested elvers does not exceed Maine’s quota. Please understand, this is not the public hearing on this bill, but an opportunity to talk informally with DMR about alternative solutions, outside of the legislative process.

    • At this time, this bill has not been scheduled for its public hearing before the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources.
  • An update on the upcoming meeting of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) and American eels, including a potential Resolution pertaining to Anguillid species.
  • Logistics for upcoming elver season – distribution of cards, an enhancement to tokens, timing of dealer set-ups, etc.

We look forward to talking with you about these important topics in your fishery.
