Clearance/Verification letter: No Fee
When applying for a license in another state, a clearance/verification letter may be issued to individuals who at one time held a Maine Driver's License and have either lost their Maine issued Driver's License or have been asked to provide verification that the Maine Driver's License is in a valid status.
Most states require the clearance/verification letter be less than 30 days old to be valid.
Note: Not all states accept clearance/verification letters.
A letter can be obtained by calling or writing to the phone/address indicated below.
Copy of restoration letter: $10 fee
Your request must be made in writing and include:
- full name (as it appears on the Maine Driver's License);
- current mailing address;
- date of Birth;
- Driver’s License Number or Social Security Number.
An additional fee of $2 is required to fax these documents. If you wish to have these documents faxed, please include a fax number with your request. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Secretary of State.
