HIV Prevention Drugs, PrEP

The Federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines for HIV Prevention state:  

• All sexually active adults and adolescents should be informed about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of HIV. 
• PrEP should be offered to sexually active adults and adolescents at substantial risk of acquiring HIV. 

MaineCare covers PrEP drugs Apretude and Descovy without a Prior Authorization (PA), and Truvada with a PA. Under the 2021 Act To Improve Access to HIV Prevention Medications, all Maine insurers must cover at least one PrEP drug without prior authorization.
