Habitat
Lives in a variety of habitat types, with a preference for moist woodland with leaf cover and logs.
Diet
This carnivore primarily eats caterpillars, grubs, slugs, and spiders, using grassy and leafy cover to hunt prey.
Distinctive Characteristics
A small rodent with a pointed nose, long tail, and musky odor. The masked shrew is one of the smallest mammals in Maine, about 3-4 inches in length.
Predators
Owl, snakes, and weasels.
Nocturnal/Diurnal
Active year-round, day and night.
Reproduction & Family Structure
Multiple litters of five to seven young per year, born anytime from March through September.
