MDIFW Data
MDIFW maps observations and habitats of rare, threatened, and endangered wildlife species in part to determine whether activities proposed for permitting might negatively affect wildlife resources. The data sets are specific to the state statutes that define them. Follow the links below to learn more about these habitats and the applicable statutes.
Essential Wildlife Habitats are mapped for a subset of species identified by the Maine Endangered Species Act [MESA, MRSA 12§12801]. Current data layers include:
- Piping Plover/Least Tern
- Roseate Tern
Significant Wildlife Habitats are defined by the Natural Resources Protection Act [NRPA, MRSA 38§480-A]. Current data layers include:
- Deer wintering areas
- Inland waterfowl/wading bird habitats
- Seabird nesting islands
- Shorebird areas
- Significant vernal pools
- Tidal waterfowl/wading bird habitats
Endangered and Threatened species are identified under the Maine Endangered Species Act, which prohibits the Take (killing) or Harassment (injury or disruption of normal behavioral patterns) of state-listed species.
Special Concern species are state rare species monitored by MDIFW that are regulated during smaller project reviews but may be subject to habitat protection standards for larger projects requiring Site Location law permitting in organized towns.
