MaineCare Telehealth Services Provider Licensure Requirements

As a reminder, all providers delivering telehealth services to MaineCare members must be enrolled with MaineCare and must comply with MaineCare Benefits Manual (MBM) Chapter I, Section 4: Telehealth Services.

Chapter I, Section 4 requires that providers be “appropriately licensed, accredited, certified, and/or registered in the state where the member is located during the provision of the telehealth service.”

This means that all providers delivering in-person or telehealth services to MaineCare members, who are in Maine at the time of the service, must hold appropriate Maine credentials or Interstate Licensure Compacts recognized by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (DPFR) or other appropriate organization.

Pursuant to MBM, Ch. I, Section 1.18 failure to comply with these requirements can result in the denial of claims or recoupment of payment because services delivered without proper state licensure are not eligible for reimbursement.
