Hazardous Air Pollutants Program

The Hazardous Air Pollutants Program is specifically dedicated to the collection and dissemination of data about hazardous air pollutants in Maine. Hazardous air pollutants are those that, in sufficient concentration, could cause serious health effects to people or have serious adverse effects upon the environment. In order to help protect the health of Maine residents and preserve our environment, the Department of Environmental Protection has developed this web site to help enlighten Maine's public as to the dangers associated with hazardous air pollutants.

Hazardous Air Pollutant Information

Hazardous Air Pollutants: An Overview is designed to answer basic questions about the nature of hazardous air pollutants, their sources in Maine, and programs used to mitigate their impact upon the people of Maine.

NESHAP and MACT are acronyms for National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) and Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards which are used to control hazardous air pollutants. This site provides information for both "major" HAP sources (e.g. industrial facilities) and "area" HAP sources (e.g. small boilers, dry cleaners, gasoline distribution, and engines).
