Attention Primary Care Providers: Powdered Infant Formula Recall
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an infant formula recall for formulas produced by Abbott formula manufacturing company, including Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare. If a MaineCare member attempts to fill, or has filled, a prescription for any medical powdered formula that is on the recall list, the pharmacist will coordinate the recall with the member and, if needed, request a prescription change from the prescribing provider.
These formulas are provided to Women, Infants and Children (WIC) participants, and the Maine WIC State Agency is working to provide similar formula substitutions to reduce any harm these recalled formulas may cause. Medical powder formulas that WIC provides are on the recall list. Local WIC Agencies may call to get updated medical documentation or request a change in prescription formula if formulas are not available at the store. Please see the webpage for local WIC agency phone numbers at Maine.gov/WIC.
See the Abbott webpage for details about the recall, to check the formula lot numbers, or for the FAQ. You can also see the CDC press release for more detail.
We thank you for your cooperation and continued efforts to help serve MaineCare members and the participants of Maine WIC.
