Maine and the Forest Legacy Program
The Forest Legacy Program is a competitively awarded conservation grant program administered by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in partnership with State agencies. It encourages the protection of privately-owned forest lands through conservation easements or land purchases. The State of Maine coordinates Forest Legacy Program grant applications through the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry - Bureau of Parks and Lands. Maine has been a national leader in acquiring Forest Legacy funds to conserve vital conservation and working forest easements and fee-ownership lands.
Maine Forest Legacy Committee
The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands coordinates the Maine Forest Legacy Committee, which performs several important functions including:
- Advising the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Bureau of Parks and Lands on program policy;
- Recommending projects to be presented to Congress for funding through the national Forest Legacy Program.
