Conditional Interpreter
"Conditional Interpreter" means a license is granted to an applicant who has completed the educational requirements, passed a national interpreter certification knowledge exam and passed an American Sign Language Proficiency interview but who is not certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) who provides::
- American Sign Language-based interpreting, which is the process of conveying information between American Sign Language and English; or
- Intermediary Interpreting, which means interpreting services rendered by a deaf interpreter to facilitate communication between another deaf person and another licensed interpreter or between two or more deaf persons.

- License Fee $200.00
- Payment of a $21.00 Fee for a State Police criminal background (SBI) check
- Make check payable to "Maine State Treasurer."

A conditional license may be held no more than 4 years and must be renewed annually on June 30

Conditional Deaf Interpreter
"Conditional Deaf Interpreter" means a license is granted to an applicant who has completed the educational requirements, passed a national interpreter certification knowledge exam and passed an American Sign Language Proficiency interview but who is not certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID), and whose sense of hearing is nonfunctional for the purpose of communication, whose primary means of communication is visual or tactile, and who provides intermediary interpreting.
