MaineCare Members: Common Questions About the Temporary Hold on MaineCare Payments to Some Providers of Health Care Services

On March 10, 2025, MaineCare sent a message to members to let them know about a temporary hold on MaineCare payments to some healthcare providers. Since that message, MaineCare has heard that some members are worried about their coverage due to this hold.

Here are some questions we’ve been receiving:

Will I lose my MaineCare coverage due to this hold?

No, the temporary hold on provider payments does not affect your eligibility or coverage. MaineCare has not changed who qualifies or what services are covered because of the budget shortfall.

Will I still be able to get my medication or see my doctor?

Yes, MaineCare-covered services, including doctor visits, prescriptions, and other necessary care are still available to members. Providers will still get paid for these services, though in some cases there may be a delay in payment.

Do I need to pay for my MaineCare-covered services?

No, MaineCare members are not responsible for paying for covered services, except for standard copayments. Members can learn more about required copayments here

Providers may not ask MaineCare members (or a representative of the member) to pay for any MaineCare-covered service, except for copayments. Providers cannot refuse services to a member due to unpaid copayments.

If a provider bills you for a MaineCare covered service, call Member Services at 1-800-977-6740.
