Motorcycle School License (how to obtain)
Motorcycle Rider Education School License (Chapter 11 Rules Governing Motorcycle Rider Education)
- A motorcycle rider education school consists of a classroom and a range.
- A motorcycle rider education school license authorizes the owner to hold Basic RiderCourses. The school owner must employ licensed Rider Education Instructors, certified to teach the Basic RiderCourse.
Motorcycle Rider Education School Licenses and Fees
Applicants must license each location where motorcycle rider education will be conducted and submit a license application and fee of $150.00 for each location.
General Application Requirements
To apply for a license, you must complete a motorcycle school license application form and meet the following requirements:
- You must submit a letter from the city/town giving permission to use the facility for motorcycle rider education. Also, you will need a letter from the local fire department stating the school meets 101 Life Safety Codes.
- You must submit completed Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Rider Education Recognition Program paperwork with digital color photos of the range area.
- You must also submit a certificate of insurance from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
- Submit copy of cancellation/refund policy.
- Pass an inspection of classroom, range and motorcycles by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Record Keeping and Reporting Requirements
- All motorcycle rider education new course reports and course completion reports must be up-to-date and open to inspection by the Secretary of State at all reasonable times.
- All site records must be retained for at least five (5) years and kept at the record keeping location indicated on the site license application.
- A motorcycle rider education new course report must be filed at least seven (7) days prior to the date the course starts.
- A motorcycle rider education course completion report must list each student by name, date-of-birth, telephone number and course completion certificate number. This report must be filed within seven (7) days of the date the course ends.
Other Information
Your application will be reviewed by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to determine whether you meet the licensing requirements. If your application is approved, you will be issued a license which will be mailed to you. The license will expire December 31st annually. Operating a motorcycle rider education school without a valid license is a Class E crime.
Once you are issued a Motorcycle Rider Education School license it is your responsibility to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in writing of any change in information on the original license application (e.g., change of school name or ownership, address, telephone number, driving or criminal record, employee health, motorcycles used for training, and instructors employed by the school). All correspondence and renewal notices will be sent to the licensee's last known address on file with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
