AUGUSTA, MAINE — A two phased storm system moving into Maine early Saturday and lasting through Sunday could produce snowfall accumulations for interior regions of the state. The first wave on Saturday will impact Western and Central Maine with snow and sleet. Heavy mixed precipitation including sleet and freezing rain along the I-95 corridor will make for especially hazardous travel conditions on Sunday as the second wave of the storm moves across the entire state. Overall snow, sleet and freezing rain accumulations will be greatest across Western Maine where a Winter Storm Watch is in effect. Freezing rain and sleet will turn over to rain from the coast working its way inland Sunday afternoon through the night with the storm ending as plain rain across all locations on Monday. Wind gusts look light with this storm but could gust 30 - 35 MPH on Monday from the south along the coast. Travel will be very difficult due to the mixed precipitation at times this weekend. Stay tuned to weather updates as this is a complex system with different weather conditions expected at different times across the state.

“Spring storms can be deceiving, and we are expecting a complex storm that will result in poor driving conditions. Folks should postpone or cancel travel plans this weekend, if possible,” said MEMA Director Pete Rogers. “Monitor your local forecast to stay aware of changing conditions. If you must travel, have your emergency car kit ready and allow ample time to get where you are going. Also, drivers should leave plenty of room for plow trucks, first responders and emergency crews.”

If you must travel during the storm, tell someone where you are going and when you anticipate arriving at your destination. Your emergency car kit should have the following supplies:

  • Flashlight with new batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Ice scraper
  • Snow shovel
  • Jumper cables – know how to use them properly before attempting to use them
  • Water
  • Blanket
  • Cellphone charger
  • Reflective triangles, a flare, or a bright garment to signal needing help
  • Tool kit
  • Waterproof matches

Warming and Charging Centers operated by local municipalities or organizations may open across the state as needed. To find a location near you visit:  https://www.maine.gov/mema/response-recovery/mass-care. You may also dial 2-1-1 for assistance or text your zip code to the number 898-211.
