Immunizations

School Health Immunizations Web Banner

Immunizations remain the single most effective way to protect against many diseases and some cancers. The immunization schedule is designed to provide immunity (protection) early in life before children are likely to be exposed to serious, potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccines are safe and effective at preventing serious diseases.

A Medical exemption is to be provided by the parent/student and must be a written statement from a Maine licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant that, in the licensed physician's, nurse practitioner's, or physician assistant's professional judgment, immunization against one or more of the diseases may be medically inadvisable.

School Nurses can easily access student immunization records by accessing Maine's statewide immunization registry.

School-Located Vaccine Clinic Toolkit

The Maine Department of Education and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) support Maine schools and community health partners efforts to provide school located vaccines if they choose to do so. The past efforts of school nurses and community health partners has led to improved health and attendance of school-aged children.
