Maine Environmental & Climate Literacy Plan

Banner

The Maine Environmental and Climate Literacy Plan outlines a vision of environmental literacy for our state and a plan for a coordinated statewide effort to strengthen environmental education, climate literacy, and outdoor learning as a critical piece of every youth’s educational journey.

History:

The Maine Environmental Literacy Plan was first adopted by the Maine Department of Education (DOE) in 2010 as a product of a collaborative effort between the Maine Department of Education, Maine Audubon, the Maine Department of Conservation, and the Maine Environmental Education Association. In 2022, those same partners came together to prepare this revised version of Maine’s Environmental Literacy Plan. Most recently, on the recommendation of the Maine Climate Plan, the Maine DOE convened a taskforce in the Spring of 2024 and added an Addendum specifically focusing on Climate Literacy. These revisions, the engagement in this work, and the progress statewide in these areas reflect the immense momentum in Maine in environmental education, both in public education and in communities throughout Maine.
