Educational facilities are long-term investments which require long-term management plans. Maine school districts should establish and practice sound management policies that develop, preserve and protect their facilities.
In accordance with 20-A MRS §4001 sub-§7, School Administrative Units (SAUs), including the unorganized territories, shall establish and maintain a maintenance and capital improvement program for all school facilities.
The required content for maintenance and capital improvement plans is detailed in Rules Chapter 64, Section 2 (A, B, and C). The format of these plans may be determined at the local level. It is not necessary to submit facility maintenance and capital improvement plans to the Department of Education on an annual basis. SAUs will continue to verify their compliance every three years through the SAU Basic School Approval Form (EF-I-291).
