The Maine Floodplain Management Program (FMP) is the coordinating agency for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a voluntary program that offers flood insurance in exchange for a community's commitment to practice sound land use management. The NFIP is the only source of affordable flood insurance and offers property owners and renters an opportunity to purchase flood insurance.
The NFIP Flood Insurance is available only in participating communities. Mortgage loans and disaster assistance are severely limited in communities that do not participate in the NFIP.
FMP helps communities participating in or interested in joining the NFIP by providing workshops on floodplain management requirements, model ordinances and permits, floodplain maps, and technical information.
FMP also works with individuals, communities, and professionals to reduce the risk of flooding. Flooding in Maine is largely the result of coastal storms, ice jams, heavy spring rains, and runoff. Flooding has been responsible for millions of dollars of property damage.
FMP provides:
- Flood zone determination
- Technical assistance
- Community support with ordinances and permits
- Flood Hazard Mapping
- Community Rating System assistance
- Sustainability and resilience guidance
- Interagency permit reviews
