Pen Bay Medical Center recognized as a "Pediatric Ready" hospital

Maine EMS is pleased and excited to share that today the EMS for Children program recognized Pen Bay Hospital’s Emergency Department for their readiness in caring for ill and injured pediatric patients. The Maine “Always Ready for Children” program is a voluntary recognition process that examines pediatric readiness through the Maine State EMS office. Funded through the national HRSA Emergency Medical Services for Children, these recognition standards are evidence-based metrics developed in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the national Emergency Nurses Association, American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American College of Surgeons. The Maine EMSC program has collaborated with all New England states, New York and New Jersey to develop a regional recognition program, and we are pleased to have Pen Bay join this group of pediatric ready hospitals.

The recognition is the result of the hard work of all the incredible staff in the ED, and leadership throughout the hospital and at Maine Health. Of particular importance is the dedication and work by Dr Tyler Giberson, Chair of Emergency Medicine and Diane Hynes, the pediatric ED care coordinator. In his remarks, Dr. Giberson stated "We are honored to be recognized and this is only the beginning of our hospital's commitment to children and their care in the ED"

One of the key aspects is a comprehensive review and survey on the pediatric readiness of the emergency department. This survey examines equipment and resources, continuing education, plans and processes for emergencies and disaster readiness. Most importantly, it aims to ensure equitable and family centric care for all pediatric patients.

National research shows an ED that is pediatric ready is associated with

• A 76% lower mortality risk in medically ill children

• A 60% lower mortality risk in traumatically injured children

Pen Bay is only the second hospital in Maine to achieve recognition and represents the care and commitment of Pen Bay Hospital and Maine Health to the health of residents and visitors throughout Knox County.

Director Wil O'Neal and EMSC Program Manager Marc Minkler were pleased to present this recognition to Pen Bay Hospital.
