Testing & Portfolios

A person seeking to license as an emergency medical services provider in Maine must successfully complete a Maine EMS-approved licensure course, obtain reciprocity from another state certification/license, or be certified by the National Registry of EMTs..  Maine EMS uses state defined training center guidelines (EMR & EMT) and CAAHEP standards (AEMT & Paramedic) for courses, using a portfolio system for skills evaluation during a student's initial certification course.  This portfolio system develops pyschomotor skills throughout the course and is specific to each Maine EMS licensed training center.  Upon successful course completion, students must complete the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) cognitive exam to obtain certification through the NREMT.  All initial licensure applicants must have completed the defined Maine EMS licensed training center portfolio process and NREMT cognitive exams, and achieved NREMT certification to be eligible for Maine EMS licensure at EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic levels.

All computer based exams are administered through Pearson Vue Testing Centers throughout Maine and the US.  Information about testing rules, accommodations and sites can be reviewed at the Pearson Vue website for NREMT.

Maine EMS oversees portfolios at the EMR and EMT levels, and the NREMT oversees portfolios at the AEMT and Paramedic levels.  Maine EMS does not directly conduct courses - all licensure courses, clinical experiences, portfolios and computer based testing are conducted through Maine EMS licensed training centers, who are responsible for the testing of students.

Applying for a Adaptive Computer Based Test (CBT)

Maine EMS uses the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) computer based test (CBT) to fulfill State of Maine cognitive testing requirements for persons seeking a Maine EMS license as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic.
