Why Computer Science Matters

Computer science is a foundational part of a well-rounded education in today's world. It helps students understand how technology works, not just how to use it, and prepares them to engage thoughtfully and creatively in an increasingly digital society.

Through computer science learning, students build essential skills such as problem-solving, logical reasoning, collaboration, and persistence. These skills support learning across all subject areas, from mathematics and science to language arts and social studies.

Computer science also helps students become informed digital citizens. As technology continues to shape communication, work, and daily life, students benefit from understanding how digital systems operate, how data is used, and how technology can be designed ethically and responsibly.

In addition, computer science opens pathways to a wide range of careers and postsecondary opportunities. However, its value extends beyond specific job preparation. It equips all students with the confidence and skills to navigate a technology-rich world, whether they pursue technical fields or not.

Ensuring access to computer science for all students supports educational equity and helps prepare learners across Maine for future success in school, work, and civic life.
