Building Safety Month Week 1 Video: Safe Homes, Strong Communities

Building safety is an essential part of community resilience, from providing safe, affordable housing to implementing disaster-resilient building codes and accessible design.

This year, Governor Janet Mills proclaimed May as Building Safety Month in the state of Maine. Building Safety Month is an annual global campaign led by the International Code Council to increase awareness of building safety, codes, and resilient construction to protect homes and communities.

In honor of Building Safety Month, the Division of Building Codes and Standards at the Maine Office of Community Affairs will release a video every week through the month of May about improving building safety.

The theme for Building Safety Month 2026 is "Built to Last," which promotes building safety on a personal, local, and global scale. Week 1 focuses on Safe Homes, Strong Communities, highlighting the simple actions homeowners can take to improve safety at home.

The Division of Building Codes and Standards spoke with Warren O'shea from O'shea Builders, Maya Srinivasan from Great Northern Builders, and Travis Blake from JW Design/Build about simple steps homeowners can take to make their homes safer.
