Student Mock Election to be Held Tomorrow
AUGUSTA — The Maine Student Mock Election will be held Tuesday, with students at 138 schools around the state participating.
“Hands-on learning through a mock election is a great way to teach young Mainers about our electoral process, government and the importance of making their voices heard at the ballot box,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. “Broad civics education is an important building block for the rest of their lives.”
Schools will hold mock elections mostly Tuesday, with announcement of full results expected on Wednesday. Some schools may hold their mock elections earlier or later. Students will be voting for candidates for President, U.S. Senate and their local congressional race.
“Young Mainers are the voters of the future,” said Secretary Bellows. “Hearing directly from the candidates is a great way for students to learn who is on the ballot this year, as they also learn how to cast a ballot.”
Secretary Bellows will visit a few schools Tuesday – George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham and Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls – to speak with students at mock election events. In-person interviews at those locations may be arranged.
The Student Mock Election is one of several programs for students from the Department of Secretary of State. Other programs are listed on the Secretary’s Kid’s Page.
