Secretary Dunlap announces ballot recounts for House Districts 58, 82


AUGUSTA — Two recounts of ballots cast have been requested and scheduled for the office of State Representative in Districts 58 and 82, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced Friday.

  • A recount of the House District 58 race between candidates Denise M. Hurilla (R) and James R. Handy (D) is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. This district includes part of the City of Lewiston. Unofficial preliminary results show Hurilla with 1,972 votes and Handy with 2,015 votes.
  • A recount of the House District 82 race between candidates Kent Ackley (I) and Randy Greenwood (R) is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. This district includes Litchfield, Wales and part of Monmouth. Unofficial preliminary results show Ackley with 2,153 votes and Greenwood with 2,125 votes.

The recounts will take place in the Elkins Building in Augusta, 19 Elkins Lane.

In addition to these two House recounts, two other recounts have been requested and are pending scheduling at this time. Those are the Judge of Probate race in Hancock County and the Treasurer race in Penobscot County. More information will be released as it becomes available. The deadline to request a recount in a non-ranked-choice-voting race was Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Recounts are a public proceeding. House District recounts are typically completed in one day. In a recount, the representatives of each candidate and staff members from the Department of the Secretary of State manually review each ballot to determine the official vote tally.

Results of the recount will be posted on the Maine Department of the Secretary of State website and Facebook page and released to the media via email.

State law requires the State Police to collect the ballots for the recount and keep them in a secure State Police facility until the recount has been completed. The ballots are stored in tamperproof metal containers and are closed with specially numbered security seals and locks.
