Secretary Dunlap to unveil new
Emergency Medical Services license plate
AUGUSTA – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap will unveil the new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) license plate in a brief unveiling ceremony next week.
The EMS license plate, designed by the Office of the Secretary of State, features a blue border along the top and bottom and depicts the EMS symbol: a blue, six-pointed “Star of Life” with the embedded rod of Asclepius. The plate is intended to identify the vehicles of EMTs when responding to a scene.
“We are pleased to offer this new EMS plate alongside our firefighter license plate, to help identify and acknowledge these first responders who provide life-saving help when emergencies arise,” said Secretary Dunlap.
The EMS license plate unveiling will take place Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 9 a.m. in the Welcome Center of the Statehouse in Augusta. Rep. Frances Head, who sponsored the legislation to create the plate, will speak at the unveiling. Several co-sponsors of the bill, including Senator Joyce Maker, Rep. Lloyd Herrick, Rep. Richard Pickett, Rep. John Madigan and Rep. Garrel Craig are also expected to attend, as well as representatives of Maine’s EMS community.
“The EMS license plate is not only a recognition for some of Maine’s most committed first responders, but also allows for everyone else to recognize when an EMT or paramedic is on scene during an emergency,” said Rep. Head. “I congratulate everyone who serves the public in this way, and continue to hold these men and women in the highest regard.”
The EMS plate will only be issued to licensed emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and will serve as the regular registration plate for the vehicle. EMTs who are interested in obtaining the EMS plate must submit the plate application form, which can be obtained at any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch location or online at http://maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/emsplate.html In addition to the annual registration fees, a one-time fee of $5 will apply when initially obtaining the plates. EMS plates are available as vanity plates, for an additional fee.
