Deschambault wins Senate District 32 election
BIDDEFORD ? Democratic candidate Susan Deschambault was elected to the Senate District 32 seat in the special election Tuesday, March 29, 2016, announced Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap.
With 1,785 votes, Deschambault bested Republican candidate Stephen P. Martin, who received 1,299 votes. A total of 3,140 ballots were cast in the special election for Senate District 32, includes the York County municipalities of Alfred, Arundel, Biddeford, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman. Both candidates are residents of Biddeford.
A third candidate whose name appeared on the ballot, Alan Brown, of the Green Independent party, had withdrawn his candidacy on Feb. 25, after the deadline had passed to remove his name from the ballot. Votes for Brown were treated as blanks.
Tuesday?s special election was necessitated by the resignation of Sen. David E. Dutremble of Biddeford, who submitted his resignation to the State on Jan. 28. Deschambault will be sworn in to serve out the remainder of Dutremble?s term, through November 2016.
