Replacement titles can now be obtained online
AUGUSTA ? Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announces that replacement titles can now be obtained online, via a new service offered by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
This online service, offered through the BMV website at http://www.maine.gov/online/bmv/mvtr, is ideal for those whose vehicle titles have been lost, misplaced, or become illegible. Prior to the implementation of this online service, all replacement title requests had to be sent to the BMV?s main office in Augusta for processing. Now, the online request will immediately be sent to the main office, a new title number will be issued and the title will be mailed out within just a few days.
?This new service will save the public a great deal of time, and will make the process much easier,? said Secretary Dunlap. ?The focus we place on the development of any service is how we can help our fellow citizens by simplifying the procurement of necessary documentation and easing compliance with any state laws. This is an excellent example of that focus, and our staff has done a magnificent job bringing this forward.?
To request a replacement title to be delivered via U.S. mail, the titled owner must have a valid Maine driver?s license or State identification card. The system will first check for liens, and if the title lists a lien holder, the lien must first be released and the BMV must be notified of the release.
Those who want to file a request will need the following information:
- The vehicle year, vehicle identification number (VIN) and mileage.
- The name, date of birth and driver license number of all owners.
- A Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card.
For assistance with the online process, call (207) 624-9000 Ext. 52230.
