Re-enactors, National Guard to take part in flag-lowering ceremony at Cultural Building
AUGUSTA ? The Maine State Archives, Maine Army National Guard, Pejepscot Historical Society of Brunswick and re-enactors from the 3rd Maine Volunteer Regiment will take part in the lowering of the 1860 replica garrison flag from within the Atrium of the Maine Cultural Building, in a brief ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The flag will be gathered by the 3rd Maine re-enactors and carried to the Atrium, where it will be folded and presented to Maine Army National Guard Brigadier General John D?Errico, acting on behalf of Adjutant General Gerard F. Bolduc. Brief remarks will follow.
The ceremony recalls the return of Maine?s troops from the Civil War, when the disbanding regiments would present their colors to Adjutant General John Hodsdon and Gov. Samuel Cony. The colors and battle flags would later be displayed in the Capitol.
The garrison flag replica has been hanging in the Atrium since 2013 as part of Maine?s commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The flag was commissioned and remains the property of the Pejepscot Historical Society.
Upon receiving the flag from the 3rd Maine re-enactors, Brigadier General D?Errico will return it to the history society and its director, Jennifer Blanchard.
