New Ellsworth Motor Vehicle Office location to be celebrated Friday

ELLSWORTH – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap will cut the ribbon this Friday to celebrate the opening of the new Ellsworth Bureau of Motor Vehicles office at 22 School St.

The office, which was previously located across the parking lot at 24 Church St., has been open to the public in its new location since Monday, Nov. 24. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at which Dunlap will be joined by motor vehicle office staff as well as State Representative Louis Luchini of Ellsworth.

Were pretty happy that the relocation of the Ellsworth office is going right next door its an area that Hancock County residents are familiar with, so the disruption should be very minimal, said Dunlap. We like the downtown area because its readily accessible from all points, and affords great routes for road tests.

Patty Leighton is the manager of the Ellsworth branch, which had been located at 24 Church St. for more than 30 years. The roof of the former building was replaced in December 1997, but a cave-in resulted, displacing staff to the Mill Mall until the repairs were completed in January 1998. The BMV was also temporarily located in two trailers during the winter of 1996-97 while an addition to the building was completed.

The move was made due to the need for improvements to the heating and cooling systems, as well as space requirements. The newly constructed 22 School St. office was designed with those systems in place and consists of 4,000 square feet of space, compared to 3,900 square feet currently available. Customers use the same parking lot, and written driver license and road tests continue to be completed from the new location. The branch phone number remains the same, at 667-9363.
