Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. to Speak at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Veterans Day Ceremony in Caribou

CARIBOU, Maine – Secretary of State Charlie Summers will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day ceremony that will take place at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Caribou at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 11, 2011.

Representatives from the offices of Senator Susan Collins, Senator Olympia Snowe, and Representative Mike Michaud will also be speaking during the ceremony.   Following the remarks, there will be a ceremonial laying of the wreath, a twenty-one gun salute, taps, and the benediction.

An act authorizing the creation of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery was signed in 1999.  Shortly thereafter 33.4 acres of land were donated by John and Joyce Noble of Caribou, and construction of the cemetery began in January 2002. The cemetery was formally dedicated on June 1, 2003.

The Northern Maine Veterans Commemorative Cemetery Corporation (NMVCCC) has worked to raise much needed funds for the ongoing upkeep and enhancement of the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in order to provide the best possible options for honored burials in Northern Maine. The NMVCCC is comprised of members from the American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, Maine Department of Defense and Veterans Services, as well as the Maine Funeral Directors Association.
