Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. to Recognize the Cliff Island Library Club for 100 Years of Incorporation

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Secretary of State Charlie Summers will honor the Cliff Island Library Club with a certificate for achieving 100 years of incorporation. He will present the certificate to Diane Little, Cliff Island Library Club Board President, at a ceremony on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 10:00 AM.

During the summer of 1907 the Cliff Island Improvement Society decided to form a library due to the prohibitive cost of borrowing books from the state traveling library.  They began accepting used books and donations through seasonal fundraising efforts.  By 1911 the library had gathered a significant collection and the Cliff Island Library Club was incorporated.  In 1915 the library moved into the cottage that it still occupies today.  Since then the library has enjoyed many improvements:  they have upgraded to a computer filing system, bar codes have been placed on each of the 7000+ books, and they now offer WIFI.

The same year the Cliff Island Library Club was incorporated many other notable events occurred, including the ground breaking of Fenway Park in Boston, the opening of the New York Public Library, the first celebration of International Women’s Day, and the birth of Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball, and Roy Rogers.

The Division on Corporations within the Department of the Secretary of State maintains records for over 80,000 business entities and nonprofit corporations. Additional corporations celebrating 100 years of incorporation in Maine during 2011 are the Arbutus Grange No. 450; the Chelsea Grange; the Maine Council of Churches; the Ogunquit Fire Company; the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce; the Free Public Library Association of Vassalboro; J.E.L., Inc.; North Haven Grange No. 496; the Orchard Grove Cemetery Association; the Association Co-Operative Du Conseil Chagnon No. 120; the Women’s Educational And Industrial Union of Saco; the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Hancock County; the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club; the Vassalboro Union Camp Meetings Association; the East Sangerville Grange No. 177; Allen, Sterling & Lothrup; the Bailey Island Library; the Clearwater Lake Improvement Association; Consumers Fuel Company; Phillips Public Library; and the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
