Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. to Recognize the Arbutus Grange in Surry for 100 Years of Incorporation

AUGUSTA, MAINE -- Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. will be honoring the Arbutus Grange No. 450 in Surry at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 10th for their achievement of reaching 100 years of incorporation.  Mark E. Honey from the Ellsworth American and Wilbur Saunders from the Surry Historical Society will also be speaking about the history of the grange.   A potluck supper will precede the event at 6:00 PM. All are welcome to attend. 

One of several active granges in the area, the Arbutus Grange is an integral part of the community.  Many of their events raise money to provide assistance to local families in need.  They also award scholarships each year to college-bound seniors. 

The Arbutus Grange No 450 was incorporated on January 19, 1911.  During that year many other notable events took place, including the ground breaking of Fenway Park in Boston, the opening of the New York Public Library, the first celebration of International Women’s day, and the birth of Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball, and Roy Rogers. 

The Division on Corporations within the Department of the Secretary of State maintains records for over 80,000 business entities and nonprofit corporations. Twenty-two corporations will celebrate 100 years of incorporation in Maine during 2011.
