Woodland stewardship and long-term conservation are timely issues in a region faced with many challenges - sustainable development of historic towns and villages, growing a diverse but fragile economy, combating invasive plants and insects, supporting wildlife habitats, enhancing recreational opportunities and quality of life – and through it all, maintaining a connection to the land.
The Kennebec Woodland Partnership supports a range of actions and commitments that will help keep forest as forest in Kennebec County. We aim to work with individuals and organizations that play a role in our forests, including woodland owners, municipalities, timber harvesters, foresters, biologists, local conservation groups, businesses, state agencies, and non-profit organizations.
The Partnership operates on a few key principles. Participation is voluntary and built on a mutual understanding that even diverse interests benefit from shared ideas. Individual owners can implement a spectrum of tools and strategies that will benefit the vitality of the larger forest resource. The network formed through the Partnership will facilitate information exchange that will benefit landowners and communities throughout Kennebec County. The dialogue begun at our inaugural October 21-23, 2010 conference in Winthrop has progressed into a county-wide, collaborative effort with participation from key stakeholders in an approach to Sustaining Kennebec’s Woodlands.
Thank you for visiting us! We look forward to working with you toward a healthy future for our forests.
