Braille Resources in Maine
Maine State Library Outreach arranges with the Perkins School for the Blind to have Braille library materials provided directly to eligible Maine residents without cost to users. Mainers who would like to borrow materials in Braille should contact the Perkins School directly at 1-800-852-3133.
We also have a small collection of "Twin Vision" children's books that are both Braille and print. The collection includes beginning/easy reader level and board books titles.
We also have available for loan several sets of Perkins Panda Braille literacy kits, for use with young children. These include a stuffed Perkins Panda bear, Braille and text picture book with touch textures integrated into the illustrations, and other interactive props and resource guides.
For more information on these materials or to borrow, please use our contact form.
Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD)
Maine Talking Books users are eligible for Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service from the Library of Congress. In order to use braille material on BARD, it is necessary to have adaptive equipment, such as a refreshable braille display, braille-aware notetaker, or braille embosser. To sign up for this service, please call Talking Books staff at Outreach Services, 1-800-762-7106.
