Congratulations to Michael Loring of Windham, the winner of the 2015 Maine Migratory Waterfowl Stamp Contest! Michael was one of 12 Maine Artists who submitted work in the contest, which was judged on Friday, March 27 at the State of Maine Sportsman's Show in Augusta.
Michael is an active outdoorsman who enjoys bird hunting and fishing. He has been painting for over 30 years, focusing mainly on wildlife and has done most of his work with the use of an airbrush creating murals on motorcycles, cars, trucks, snowmobiles and walls in homes and businesses. He credits his grandparents for his love of the Maine outdoors and receives a great deal of support from his wife and two sons.
Second place was awarded to artist Rick Alley of Islesford and third place went to Olga Wing of Byron. Artists Elizabeth DeRaps of Fairfield and Brenda Baker of Mexico both received Honorable Mention awards.
Contest judges were MDIF&W Outreach Coordinator Brittany Humphrey, Artist Rebekah Lowell (who won the contest in 2014), MDIF&W Biologist Kelsey Sullivan, and Ron Volk and Dennis Purington from Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
Michael received a cash award of $1,000 for his painting. The subject for the 2016 contest will be the Blue-winged Teal. Entry information for the 2016 contest will be made available at www.mefishwildlife.com soon.
Maine Migratory Waterfowl stamps are not only sold to duck hunters, but also to stamp collectors throughout the world. The 2015 stamps will be available for purchase in September and can be ordered by calling (207) 287-8000 or visit the Department’s website at www.mefishwildlife.com. The 2015 stamps will only be available for purchase through June 30, 2016, after which any unsold stamps will be destroyed. Previous issues (1984-2014) were sold under the same procedure and are available only on the secondary market, from stamp collectors and dealers. All revenues from the sale of duck stamps are used by the Department for waterfowl habitat acquisition and management.
