The Inspections Division of the State Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for all facilities licensed by the Department of Human Services and for licensing and permitting explosives and fireworks. Inspections work in conjunction with Fire Investigations when requested or required. Inspections inspects approximately 25 unique facility types with the primary focus being to enforce the Life Safety Code NFPA 101. Types of facilities inspected include hospitals, nursing homes, daycare facilities, boarding homes, and mental health.

Inspections consists of an Assistant State Fire Marshal of Prevention, two supervisors, eight field inspectors, and three clerical staff. When inspecting buildings, inspectors are making sure a building meets requirements of NFPA 101 for new and existing buildings. Inspectors must refer back to the code under which the structure was built to clarify that the building is compliant with code requirements. Inspections is preparing to use field computers for these inspections.

A big part of an inspector's daily activities is working directly with the public. Inspectors incorporate education into the inspection process, provide training for local fire inspectors and Maine Fire Inspector Technicians          so that local fire officials can assist with inspections in their own area. The Inspections Division also gives guidance and assistance to local fire officials for code enforcement and interpretation.
