Habitat: Dry open woods, thickets, openings, sometimes fields and pastures, especially in sandy soil.
Range: Maine to Florida, west to southern Ontario, Kansas, and Texas.
Aids to Identification: Often confused with Hieraceum scabrum, which can sometimes show a tall, cylindrical flowering head like that of H. gronovii. These two species can be separated by the number of flowers per capitulum; Hieracium gronovii has 20-40 flowers per capitulum and H. scabrum has 40-100.
Phenology: Flowers late July to October.
