Welcome to the Attorney General's employment page. The Office of Attorney General provides legal counsel and legal representation to the various agencies, departments, and branches of state government through twelve divisions:

We employ lawyers, who serve as Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) as well as Research Assistants, Detectives and Legal Secretaries. We employ a number of Detectives in Investigations and the Health Care Crimes Unit of the Health Care and Civil Rights Division. There are also important programs run by AG staff: the Sexual Assault Forensic Program; the Juvenile Tobacco Enforcement Program; the Victim's Compensation Program; the Civil Rights Program; and the Victim's Compensation program. All AAG and Research Assistant positions are "direct-hire" positions, which mean they are hired directly by the Attorney General. Detectives and Legal Secretaries must apply through the Competitive Hire Process administered by the Bureau of Human Resources.

Assistant Attorney General
AAGs are responsible, on behalf of the Attorney General, for representing the State of Maine and officers and agencies of the State in most civil and many criminal proceedings in which the State is a party or has an interest. AAGs, on behalf of the Attorney General, also provide regular counsel to agencies of State government.

Research Assistant
The title of Research Assistant includes paralegals, victim witness advocates, and program directors/managers for juvenile tobacco control, victim's compensation fund, and collections and various administrative duties. The Attorney General by statute may set the duties of these positions, which historically have been quite variable.

Legal Secretary Positions
The Office of Attorney General also employs a number of Secretary Associates and Secretary Associates - Legal (formerly named legal secretaries and senior legal secretaries). Although these positions may be advertised on this website, they are generally not direct-hire positions. These are classified competitive positions filled from employment registers maintained by the Bureau of Human Resources as vacancies in these jobs occur. Candidates interested in these positions should apply generally to the Bureau of Human Resources for placement on the Bureau's registers for these positions. Detectives
The Office of Attorney General employs a number of detectives, or "Detectives," to conduct and assist in criminal and civil investigations in furtherance of the Office's responsibility to enforce the laws of the State of Maine. These are classified competitive direct hire positions. Further information and applications can be found on the Bureau of Human Resources website. Summer Internships in the Attorney General's Office
The Attorney General's Office offers summer internships for law students going into their second or third year of law school. The internships generally last ten weeks, with two division rotations, depending upon the interests of the interns and the needs of the office. Interns have opportunities to assist with legal research and writing, observe hearings and trials, attend meetings and interviews, and participate in myriad activities in support of the legal mission of the office. We strive to make the internships rewarding experiences for the law students who join us and are enthusiastically told by former participants that we are very successful in that regard. In 2025, and subject to available funds, the Office anticipates offering a $4,000 stipend to interns.
The Office's Recruitment Committee usually begins interviewing law students in February for the following summer. If you are a student at the University of Maine School of Law, the Office recruits summer candidates through the Law School's Career Services Office.
