E-File is a convenient and accurate way to file your Maine individual income tax return.
File using a participating preparer, purchase commercial software or a commercial website. Most of these options offer direct deposit of your refund, electronic funds withdrawal for a balance due return and even delayed debit.
Additionally, you or your preparer will receive verification that your return has been accepted.
File Prior Year Returns – MeF allows filing of Form 1040 for the current tax year and two prior tax years.
For example:
- In January 2025, 1040 MeF accepted Tax Years 2024, 2023, and 2022.
- In January 2026, 1040 MeF accepted Tax Years 2025, 2024, and 2023.
The following returns are not allowed to file using e-File:
- returns with a power of attorney currently in effect for the refund to be sent to a third party
- returns claiming a filing status that differs from the federal filing status except when a Schedule NRH is filed
- composite returns
