Governor Janet Mills today signed LD 1313, known as the Death with Dignity Act, into law. The law establishes the procedures to allow those with a terminal illness and a short time to live to be prescribed medication to end their life. These procedures include, among others, two waiting periods, one written and two oral requests, a second opinion by a consulting physician and a psychological evaluation.

Governor Janet Mills today signed a bill to improve access to critical reproductive health care for women across Maine. The bill, offered by Governor Mills and sponsored by Speaker of the House Sara Gideon, will allow physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses to perform abortions in addition to physicians.  As Attorney General, Governor Mills introduced a similar bill during the last legislative session.

Governor Janet Mills signed into law today legislation to ensure that insurance company medical reviews are conducted by medical professionals. LD 249, “An Act to Ensure Protection of Patients in Medical Reviews by Health Insurance Carriers” sponsored by Senator Geoff Gratwick, D-Bangor, was passed unanimously by the Legislature.

Governor Janet Mills announced today that she has nominated six people to serve on the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission. The Governor nominated John Cashwell, Robert Checkoway, James Cote, Kevin Hancock, former Senator Michael Pearson and former Senator Richard Rosen to serve on the Commission, an inter-governmental entity charged in part with reviewing the social, economic and legal relationship between Maine Tribes and the State.
