Tuberculin Skin Test Training

Public Health Nursing provides a Tuberculin Skin Testing (TST) Train the Trainer course to healthcare organizations at no cost. Our nurses provide healthcare professionals with the training to learn to administer and interpret TSTs and deliver Tuberculin Skin Test Training to their colleagues and partners. The training is approximately 2-4 hours, depending on group size, and covers:

  • CDC Tuberculosis (TB) and TST recommendations for healthcare personnel
  • A review of TB disease, including global, national, and state TB data
  • A comparison of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and active TB disease
  • Methods for detecting TB infection
  • Hands on practice for intradermal TST administration
  • Hands on practice interpreting TST results

Trainers who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion that is good for 3 years.

Maine’s Public Health Nursing Division works closely with the Maine CDC Tuberculosis Control Program to provide nursing case management and assessment for individuals with LTBI and TB. We welcome opportunities to work with healthcare organizations across the state to increase knowledge of TB and improve TB testing practice.
