Emergency Department Surveillance of Nonfatal Suicide-Related Outcomes (ED-SNSRO)

The Maine CDC is collaborating with the federal CDC on a syndromic surveillance program for non-fatal suicidal events. Syndromic surveillance involves real-time tracking of emergency department visits where suicidal behavior was a relevant factor from all 33 of Maine’s non-VA hospitals. ED visits that involve suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, and intentional overdoses are tracked. The goal of syndromic surveillance is to increase the timeliness of the surveillance of nonfatal suicide-related outcomes and respond to changing patterns in suicidal behavior.
