Caregiver Support

The VA provides a variety of financial, medical, and peer support benefits to help family members who are responsible for the care of a disabled veteran. Services available include access to a support line, support coordinator, peer groups, adult day health care centers, and home care, among others.

There are also specific caregiver benefits under the "Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010" that include:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Travel expenses
  • Health insurance
  • Mental health services

In Central Maine, Spectrum Generations offers the "Legacy Corps" program to provide in-home respite for caregivers by allowing them time away from the home and a break from caregiving tasks. You may be eligible to receive in-home support if you are:

  • A Family member who cares for a veteran
  • A Veteran who cares for a family member
  • A family with any military service history - including deceased relatives and in-laws
  • A family in Kennebec and Somerset county

Housing for Caregivers at Togus

The VA Maine Healthcare System offers a "home away from home" for families of patients receiving care at the Togus facility. The Fisher House is designed to provide 8 to 21 suites. All are professionally furnished and decorated in the tone and style of the local region. The houses can accommodate 16 to 42 members. Typically, they feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room, living room with library, and toys for children. Newest houses are 100% accessible for people with disabilities and include elevators.
