The last couple of weeks Gordon and I have been fine tuning our tracking skills and have moved into more advance tracking.  We started with tracking on pavement then transitioned to tracking onto grass.  It was interesting to watch his first track that went from pavement to grass.  Gordon started on the track on pavement and was tracking perfectly.  When he reached the transition from pavement to grass it blew his mind.  It was something brand new to him and he went back and forth on the pavement trying to find the odor he was used to.  When the track hit the grass, it created a whole diffe

July 2020 marks the halfway point through our five year survey period for the Maine Bird Atlas! In this blog post well celebrate a few of the milestones so far, and highlight the priorities for the future.

In early May, I decided it was time to take my toddler son on a remote fishing trip. Greyson was a relatively proficient caster, earthworms no longer freaked him out, and he was big for his age. I was certain he was ready for the Maine outdoors. Plus, I already had my kayak stashed alongside a Heritage brook trout pond that only required a milelong roundtrip hike. Last week, one lucky angler caught the fish of a lifetime when he landed a 44”, 39.2 pound lake trout. That angler, Erik Poland of Andover, caught the fish on Thursday, July 2 while fishing on Richardson Lake.
