WHEREAS, the logging industry has served as an economic driver and cultural tradition in Maine for centuries; and
WHEREAS, the logging industry creates rural jobs and provides revenue for local communities, contributing $582 million to the state’s economy annually; and
WHEREAS, loggers provide renewable material for products used by people in Maine every day; and
WHEREAS, loggers are the root of Maine’s $8.1 billion forest economy; and
WHEREAS, loggers are the means by which healthy and responsible forest management plans are accomplished; and
WHEREAS, logging provides for healthy forests for the state by maintaining vital animal habitats, protecting watersheds, sequestering carbon, providing recreational opportunities, and limiting wildfires; and
WHEREAS, logging provides for healthy forests through regeneration to ensure the sustainability of the industry for future generations of Maine people;
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim October 12, 2024 as
Maine Logger’s Day
throughout the State of Maine, and I urge all citizens to recognize this observance.
