WHEREAS, in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Economic Opportunity Act, which established the first community action agencies (CAAs) around the country among other important initiatives; and
WHEREAS, today, CAAs are trusted to connect Americans to lifechanging services and to help create pathways to prosperity in 99 percent of all American counties; and
WHEREAS, in Maine, our ten CAAs offer services and assistance to residents throughout the State in our rural, urban and suburban communities; and
WHEREAS, in the last year alone, Maine CAAs have provided nearly 47,000 households with heating assistance, weatherized over 1,600 homes, provided early childhood education for countless families, and more; and
WHEREAS, Community Action is celebrating 60 years of innovation, impact, and providing proven results to Americans;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2024 as
Community Action Month
in Maine, and I urge all citizens to recognize the hard work and dedication of all our Community Action Agencies.
