Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement mourning the loss of David Flanagan and honoring his life and legacy upon news of his passing from pancreatic cancer today: 

Portland, MAINE — Governor Janet Mills today toured two ongoing construction projects in Portland that will improve the City’s wastewater infrastructure and the environmental health of Back Cove and Casco Bay.

During her visit to Back Cove West Storage Conduit and the Back Cove South Storage Facility, Governor Mills highlighted the importance of careers in the construction industry and investments in infrastructure for Maine people, noting a $25 million investment in water infrastructure upgrades and improvements through the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan.

Earlier this week, Governor Janet Mills held her first meeting of the recently reinvigorated Aides-de-Camp program, an advisory council of military veterans who advise the Governor on policies impacting Maine veterans.

Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement in response to the Biden Administration’s decision to reopen the Canadian border in November:

“I welcome this long overdue step forward. For too long, the closed border with our Canadian neighbors has made it difficult, if not impossible, for cross-border families to see one another, and it has strained our local small businesses and our state’s tourism industry. I applaud the Administration for heeding my call and that of Maine’s Congressional Delegation by reopening the border with Canada in a safe way.”

Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement in response to Republicans in the State Legislature pushing to weaken the state’s requirement that health care workers be vaccinated against COVID-19, a position that is out of line with forthcoming Federal policy and not supported by the Maine Hospital Association, the Maine Health Care Association, and the majority of the state’s health systems:

More than $42 million in payments to 245 Maine municipalities have already been issued

The Mills Administration today announced a call for proposals for conservation and recreation projects through the Lands for Maine’s Future Program (LMF).

This LMF funding opportunity is the first since 2017 and is the direct result of Governor Mills’ proposing and lawmakers approving $40 million over four years to replenish the program in the most recent biennial budget. LMF is the State's primary funding vehicle for conserving land for its natural and recreational value.

CoverME.gov marketplace to launch on November 1 for Open Enrollment

State proposes to lease 15.2 square miles in Gulf of Maine to responsibly advance innovative floating offshore wind technology developed in Maine

The Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) today submitted an application to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to lease a 15.2-square-mile area nearly 30 miles offshore in the Gulf of Maine for the nation’s first floating offshore wind research site in federal waters.

Grants funded through the American Rescue Plan will help child care providers increase pay for workers and cover COVID-19-related costs

Dover-Foxcroft, MAINE – During a visit to Dave’s World in Dover-Foxcroft today, Governor Janet Mills announced that more than 28,000 high-efficiency heat pumps have been installed in Maine buildings over the past year, marking a major milestone toward the governor’s target of installing 100,000 new heat pumps by 2025.

In a letter today to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Governor Janet Mills urged swift action by NOAA Fisheries to reduce the unnecessary economic harm to Maine fishermen that the recently announced Federal whale protection rule will cause.

“I don’t believe this rule, as written, should take effect at all, and, at the very least, I urge you to direct NOAA Fisheries to delay the rule’s implementation of gear marking and gear modifications (including both trawling up and insertion of weak points) to July 1, 2022,” wrote Governor Mills.
